| The Virginia Ann Scheunemann Memorial Fund
Virginia Ann Scheunemann was known as Ann, and worked for many years at the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce information booth. She lived in Cardiff-by-the Sea for 43 years and was active in the community and involved in Little League, Pony League, Cub Scouts, Camp Fire girls, girls softball, and PTI-Mrs Club of Encinitas. Ann attended Oceanside High School where she met her husband John and graduated with the class of 1954. John is still active and plays senior baseball as the first baseman; he is the oldest active baseball player in San Diego County. Ann was a Brighter Side customer. Ann passed away from Breast Cancer on Friday, October 3, 2003 at the age of 68. Her husband John graciously allowed us to name our charity in her memory. The Virginia Ann Scheunemann Memorial Fund fund provides various mastectomy products, wigs and head coverings to uninsured and low-income women. The fund is kept alive through generous donations, and by fund raisers, such as the annual Turkey Trot in Oceanside every Thanksgiving morning. In 2006, the Susan G Koman foundation granted the VAS Memorial Fund $10,000 to be used for underserved women in San Diego County. In 2007, the amount given was $15,000.
With the help of these two funds, we at The Brighter Side have been able to serve several hundred women in need. Please Contact Us us if you wish to make a donation to the Virginia Ann Scheunemann Memorial Fund, a U.S. registered 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit charity.
